Can You Still Make Money Blogging In 2019?

Can You Still Make Money Blogging In 2019?

With blogging comes awesome perks like being your own boss and working from home. But is there any real money in blogging? And can you still make money blogging in 2019?

When I started blogging I was skeptical, to say the least. I mean, who pays bloggers? And what do you write about in order to get paid? To me, a blog was something you did as a hobby - not as a career.

While it's true there are plenty of personal blogs out there, there are also bloggers making insane amounts of money.

I was curious and went all-in as a full-time blogger four years ago. After a rough first year (didn't make a dime!) I managed to build a six figure blogging business from scratch.

PERKS OF BECOMING A BLOGGER

Because of blogging, I've been able to do some pretty amazing things:

  • Set my own hours.
  • Work from anywhere.
  • Make money even when I'm not working.
  • Learn how to create and grow a business.
  • Earn a six figure income as a full-time blogger.
  • Help others better their lives.

HOW MUCH DO BLOGGERS REALLY MAKE?

How much money you make blogging depends entirely on a few different factors:

  • Your niche. Some niches are highly profitable.
  • Your work ethic. There is no shortcut to success.
  • Your knowledge. Your willingness eagerness to learn new things.

Here's what these bloggers are making per month:

What we can learn from this mix of bloggers:

  • You can make money in different niches.
  • Quality blogs with awesome content make money.
  • Each of these bloggers has their own product.
  • There is serious money in blogging.

WHY BLOGGING ISN'T DEAD

Many people believe blogging is dead. What with YouTube, podcasts and social media all the rage.

But blogging is not dead. Far from it. There has never been a better time to start a blog than right now.

Why? It all comes down to trust.

In the end, what is a blog anyway? It's a place to find useful content from a source you trust.

That's where the money comes in. Being a blogger allows you to build a loyal tribe of followers who trust you. They will eat up your content - and ultimately buy from you.

This is why blogging is not going anywhere.

HOW MUCH MONEY CAN A NEW BLOG MAKE?

There's no limit to the amount of money you can make as a blogger. However, don't think it's a get rich quick scheme either.

It takes a while to make money blogging. Even longer to earn enough to make a living out of it.

But what I love about blogging is that hard work pays off. The amount of money you earn is a direct relation to the amount of work you put in.

If you do the right things (in the right order), you will make money blogging - your first month!

Here is an estimate on how much money a new blog can make:

  • Year 1. Expect to be making $1,000 per month by the end of the year. (with display ads and affiliate marketing)
  • Year 2. Expect to be earning $3,000 per month. (with ads, sponsored posts and higher priced affiliate products)
  • Years 3 and 4. A blogger can earn as much as $9,000 per month. (with your own products)

HOW TO ACCELERATE YOUR EARNING POTENTIAL

You can blog for years and years and never make any money. To make money blogging, you need to know the following:

  • what to blog about
  • what to write about
  • how to build a following
  • what to sell
  • how to sell it

Nobody knows how to do everything.

What separates the pro bloggers from the hobby bloggers is a willingness to invest in their knowledge.

It wasn't until I learned how to create a blogging business that I begin to make money. It was a mindset shift that changed everything.

I created a blogging course to help new bloggers navigate the process. It guides you step by step from step 1 all the way to monetizing your blog. You can see the Launch Your Blog course here.

HOW BLOGS MAKE MONEY

Blogging itself doesn't pay you a thing.

What you are actually building is a business.

Your blog is just the mechanism you use to get traffic to your business.

Bloggers make money from different methods:

  • Display ads. Placing ads on their blogs and getting paid per click. With Google Adsense, for example.
  • Affiliate marketing. Recommending products and being paid by commission. Such as links to products on Amazon.
  • Sponsored posts. Company paying a blogger to review their product and share your experience.
  • Creating and selling their own digital products. This is the best way to make money online - nobody to eat any of the profits.

HOW BLOGS GET TRAFFIC

When I started blogging, I wrote A TON of blog posts and got ZERO traffic.

I made several mistakes:

  • My content wasn't personal. No story. Just facts.
  • No keyword research. I wrote whatever I wanted to write about.
  • Lots of content. But none of it was truly epic content.

As a result, my first year of blogging was a total bust.

Things started to change when I implemented the following changes

  • Listened to what problems people in my niche were having.
  • Started solving problems my ideal reader had.
  • Wrote articles targeting keyword phrases that actually get searched for.
  • Created content with a specific purpose (get a share, get a subscriber, get a sale)
  • Dove head-first into Pinterest marketing.

Pinterest was the game-changer for me.

See, Pinterest isn't actually a social network. It is in fact a search engine - just like Google. It's where people go to be inspired and learn how to do new things.

Pinterest for bloggers is a match made in heaven. Imagine, a huge site whose only goal is to send you traffic!

Once I started using Pinterest to promote my blog, my blog traffic exploded.

It wasn't until I started using Tailwind that I began to see a huge spike in traffic. With Tailwind you can pin on a schedule so you can pin consistently and at peak hours.

WHY YOU NEED AN EMAIL LIST

It's difficult to make money directly selling in a blog post. After all, a reader doesn't yet know who you are. What you need to do is build trust. And trust takes time to build.

In comes the email list.

With an email list, you can grow your base of followers and have a direct line of communication with them.

Here's a sample breakdown of what you can earn by sending one email to your list.

  • Imagine you have 10,000 subscribers on your email list. (By the way, that means getting about 14 subscribers daily for 2 years. You can do this!)
  • Send an email out to your list offering a $250 product like a course or a program. (It's way better to create your own products, so you reap 100% of the profits. Yes, you can do this too!)
  • If you wrote a good subject line, 30% of your subscribers will open the email. (That's 3,000 eyeballs on your product offering.)
  • Your goal is then to get 10% of those people to actually click the link to view your product. (That's 300 clicks to your product page.)
  • Convert just 10% of those clicks into product sales. (That's 30 people.)
  • Well if my math is correct, that means sending one email generated you 30 sales at $250 each = $7,500! Not too shabby for one email, eh?

Now imagine if you developed an additional product, grew your list even bigger, increased your open rate, your click through rate and your conversion rate.

Now we're talking making serious money with your blog/email list! And they said blogging was dead.

Wow, never realized such specific niches such as sewing or succulents were so popular but that’s great to hear! My biggest issue is finding a niche that is interesting to me and profitable at the same time. Also, thanks for all the convenient hyperlinks, they’re going to be super useful!

It is as was and probably always will be , we uneducated older people with no ability in the internet age , will never be able to profit from that which seems to be so easy to those with the know how , like the invention of many things which made things enter a new age we will have to take a back seat , however I thank you for allowing my rant ..

Nobody ever knows how to do anything before they do it.

The process is try and fail, try and fail, try and fail until it becomes try and succeed.

Negative thinking is the real problem. If you don’t think you can do it – you can’t.

  • You make some interesting points. About having an email list! I feel encouraged about blogging after reading your articles. To me, blogging is a long term goal. And you need a lot of patience to get ranked on google. You make some valid points: Creating your own products, allowing display advertising on your blog, creating a niche, selling affiliate products. etc My site is a review site! I find that there is a lot of competition to get ranked. But I am happy you are prospering Thanks for the great articles.

      Thanks for the comment!

It does take a long time to get a good Google ranking, depending on the keyword.

My strategy is targeting keyword phrases that have high volume and less competition.

  • David says:

I’ve been reading various blogs lately and it seems like there are a lot of clickbait titles with content that doesn’t really go anywhere. Many of them do not even accept comments anymore which is a headshaker.

With an increase in mobile device web surfing over the last decade, it’s not as surprising to think that apps and social media get more use these days than blogs. How many people are going to read and comment on articles from their phones?

I would agree that blogging is not dead. If anything were dead I would say it’s content. High quality content seems much harder to find nowadays.

I’m familiar with email marketing, but have never been a big fan. I don’t have anything to sell or give away. Generally I would use it to send out the latest content from a blog.

Any ideas where I might come up with something to sell or give away in regards to my niche?

Hey David, thanks for your comment. For a dog blog, I’d look into creating dog training courses / ebooks.

      Example: https://thedogtrainingsecret.com

I’d supplement your income by placing amazon links in articles. I’d write content reviewing all the popular dog products like harnesses, food, treats, beds, etc.

Good one. I think I am gonna try blogging. I had one in my arsenal, but never worked on it to write the posts or any content. Guess I will give it a go
