Why Start A Blog? 4 Reasons To Start A Blog Today
If you're reading this you're probably already thinking of starting a blog - but are afraid of... everything. What will people think? Is there money in blogging? What do I even blog about? Is it too late to start a blog? What if I fail?
But you need to get over the fear of starting a blog. Your future self will thank you. There are many rewards to becoming a blogger - and they're not just financial.
Let me go over a few things before I get into why you should start a blog right now.
how I got started blogging
I resisted starting a blog for a long time. My main hangup was the word "blog" itself. The last thing I ever wanted was someone to consider me a "blogger".
But the more I looked into the definition of a blog I realized that a blog is just a website full of content. A blog doesn't have to be a personal diary or something you do as a hobby. A blog can be a real business that makes real money.
Once I looked at it from that perspective, it made it so much easier to start a "blog".
When I created my first blog 4 years ago, I was no different than you. I had no special "blogging" talent. I wasn't a good writer. I wasn't an expert on any topic. I didn't even know what I wanted to blog about.
But I did have something going for me: I had an intense desire to be my own boss and the work ethic to make it happen.
The fear of joining the rat race, driving to work every day, working until I'm old and gray. Yeah that was NOT going to be me!
Now my point of view about blogging is completely different. I see blogging as the fastest and cheapest method of making money online.
I firmly believe that if you have that dream and the willingness to put in the work, you will be successful as a blogger.
How blogs make money
Blogs make money a variety of ways. To start, you should pick one monetization method before branching out into another. Here are a few ways to monetize a blog:
I cover everything blogging in my Launch Your Blog course, from from starting a blog all the way to monetization.
With all the resources available (my course will literally walk you through every step in the process) starting a blog should be a no-brainer.
Ask any blogger and they'll tell you their only regret is not starting a blog earlier (me included). I knew this whole "start a blog" thing would bug the hell out of me forever if I didn't just try it.
You will find that your biggest regrets in life will be the things you didn't do. It's those opportunities we pass up on that just eat at us as the years go by.
If you still need more convincing, let me go over 4 important reasons to start a blog... today!
1. YOU WILL HAVE CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE
Ever feel like everything is happening so fast and you're just holding on for the ride? I get it. Feeling like you're not in control is a common feeling.
When you are shackled to a 9-5 job you don't have any control of your schedule. You can't just take time off at the drop of a hat. You can't just choose to sleep in. Your entire social life revolves around your work schedule.
What blogging does is allow you to remove the shackles and give you the freedom we all deserve.
Here's the difference between my life as a blogger and yours:
You take orders from your boss. I take orders from no one.
Blogging gives me the freedom to answer to no one but myself. I "work" whenever I want to and don't have to listen to anyone.
You work for a flat rate. My income is limitless.
You work for a flat hourly fee and your boss keeps all the profit. If the company has a record quarter, it doesn't mean you're getting a cut of the profit.
As for me? My income has no limits. There are bloggers making anywhere from $1,000 per month all the way up to $100,000 per month.
your hard work is irrelevant. My hard work is rewarded.
At a regular 9-5 you get paid regardless of whether you work hard or not. It's difficult to build the motivation to work hard when it's your boss who will reap the rewards.
What I love about blogging is that you get out what you put in. If you put in the time and work hard - you will make money blogging.
You make money when you work. I make money while I sleep.
If you get sick - you don’t get paid. If you take a vacation - you don't get paid.
I on the other hand might have my best week (income-wise) while I am stuck at home with the flu or at a resort for a weekend getaway.
You work Monday - Friday, 9-5. I work whenever I feel like it.
There goes your alarm. Time to get up for work and do the same thing you did yesterday. It's depressing just thinking about that.
But for full-time bloggers like me, blogging gives me the freedom to work whenever I want, wherever I want. This is the part where I brag about working on my laptop at the beach, but you can't even see the screen with the sun out!
You have to ask your boss for a day off. I can do anything I want, anytime I want.
You miss birthday parties. You will miss your kids' sporting events or concerts. You can't go out late at night. You can't go on a vacation at the drop of a hat. In other words, you miss out on life itself.
Until you retire at 70, then I guess you can begin enjoying your life? Holy cow the rat race sucks!
As I write this, I am hours away from going on a fun weekend getaway. I should be packing but instead, here I am! Probably not smart, but I do have the freedom to choose what I do with my time.
2. IT’S CHEAP (REAL CHEAP) TO START A BLOG
Compared to the costs of starting a business with a physical store, starting a blog is cheap. I mean really cheap. We’re talking the difference between $50,000 and like 5 bucks a month!
Minimum Costs to start a blog
Here are the sample costs to start a blog:
- Domain name: $15 per year
- Hosting: $3 per month
- WordPress: free
- Theme for your blog: free
There's no other business in the world that can go toe-to-toe with blogging as far as cost goes. Plus, there's so many free blogging tools out there too.
additional optional costs to start a blog
Now there are other costs to blogging, but they are all optional. For example, here are some of the things I have paid for in order to take my blog(s) to the next level.
3. YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD
One of the best reasons to start a blog is because of the impact you can have in the lives of others.
I love to blog because I love to make money. But if you ask me what my true passion is, it's helping others make money blogging. There is no feeling better in the world than helping someone make extra money.
You never know the personal challenges that someone is facing. I never ask, but I can only imagine some people are going through a difficult time financially and when I hear of a success story, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
What is your passion? Follow it and you can make a difference in the lives of so many people.
Imagine you start a fitness / weight loss blog, you can help people feel better about themselves, get healthier and possibly even save someone's life.
You can start a finance blog and help people slash their debt, improve their credit score and buy their dream home.
There are so many blog topics where you can make a real difference in peoples' lives.
There's really nothing better than helping others + making money at the same time.
Regardless of what blog niche you choose, the purpose of your blog will be to help others fix their problems and teach them something new. People will always pay you to help them fix a problem. Speaking of money...
4. YOU REALLY CAN MAKE MONEY BLOGGING
I have found that blogging is the best path to making money online. It's the perfect side hustle. Blogging can be as passive or as active as you like.
A reason I enjoy blogging is because it's possible to make only $1,000 a month all the way up to $100,000 per month blogging! There definitely is money in blogging. There is no limit and there are no qualifications to get started.
TREAT YOUR BLOG LIKE A BUSINESS.
You should treat your blog as if it were a real business, because it is a business. When I began to treat my blog like a business, things started to change for me.
When I started to invest in myself (by feeding myself knowledge) and my blog, I started seeing real results.
And that my friends is the difference between hobby bloggers and those who make real money blogging. If you are serious about making money online - you need to invest both your time and your money into your blogging business.
Can you start a blog for free?
Sure, lots of people have free blogs. How many earn a living from their free blog? None. By using a free blogging platform, your blog will never grow to its full potential.
When you blog on a free blog host you are crippling your chances of being a successful blogger. Here's why you should never start a blog on a free blog host like tumblr, Medium, wordpress.com and Blogger.
6 bloggers making over 1 million dollars per year
So how much money can you really make blogging? Here's a few bloggers who earn over a million dollars per year with their blogs.
Are you motivated yet? Imagine if you made just 1% of what they make per month. Now imagine if you made 10% of what they make. They are #blogginggoals for sure.
